Hideaki Anno directs this wildly popular hallucinogenic animated feature about killer space spirits and monstrous robots. In the year 2000, a mysterious shito (angel) named Adam dropped from the heavens and smashed into the South Pole. The impact melted the ice shelf, flooding the world and darkening the skies with ash. As a result, half the worlds population died horrible deaths, locking humanity in a pitched battle for its existence against the dreaded shito using giant robots called Evas. In 2015, teenaged Shinji is instructed by his scientist father to pilot Evangelion, the most powerful of these robots.
